Scrapped Taiwanese Longline Vessels A Boon for Sea Turtles
Environmentalists and Scientists Urge the UN and Other Nations to Follow Suit with a Moratorium in the Pacific

October 17, 2005

Contact:Robert Ovetz, Sea Turtle Restoration Project, PhD, +1 415-488-0370 x106, robert@seaturtles.org

Forest Knolls, California – The Taiwanese government has just announced that it will dismantle 120 tuna longline vessels, about 5% of its fleet. Environmentalists are praising this reduction in the largest longline fleet in the Pacific as a boon for sea turtles which are injured and killed by longlines in large numbers in the Pacific ocean. "Longline fishing is costly, inefficient and damages tuna fisheries. There are just far too many boats chasing too few fish and killing far too many sea turtles," said Robert Ovetz, PhD, Save the Leatherback Campaign Coordinator. It is estimated that more than 1.4 billion longline hooks are set in the world's oceans every year. Longline fishing is a technique in which thousands of baited hooks are strung on monofilament lines stretching as far as 60 miles. Taiwan has the largest number of longline vessels in the Pacific with an estimated 2,113 vessels in the Pacific alone. Japan, which has the second largest longline fleet in the Pacific, has also followed suit with reductions in recent years. This summer, The U.S. even banned fishing for Pacific bigeye tuna for the rest of the year because of overfishing. "Fewer hooks means fewer turtles, sharks, seabirds, billfish and marine mammals will be killed. This is urgently needed if we are to turn around the descent of sea turtles and albatross seabirds into extinction," Ovetz added.

Recent scientific reports warn that the 100 million year old Pacific leatherback sea turtles, whose female nesting population has collapsed by 95% since 1980, could go extinct in the next decade. Nineteen species of seabirds, including the black-footed albatross, are also threatened with extinction by longlines. An estimated 4.4 million turtles, sharks, seabirds, billfish and marine mammals are injured and killed every year by longlines in the Pacific. Other reports have pinpointed longline fishing as causing an 87-99% decline in large pelagic fish in the Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific. 1,007 international scientists from 97 countries are urging the UN to implement a moratorium on longline fishing in the Pacific Ocean to prevent the extinction of the critically endangered leatherback sea turtle. The scientists are joined by 281 non-governmental organizations from 62 countries. The list of signers includes famed primatologist Dr. Jane Goodall, biologist E.O. Wilson, oceanographer Dr. Sylvia Earle, a National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence, and former U.S. astronaut Bernard Harris, Jr. M.D. "While a good first step, a moratorium is needed in order to have time to put into place further reductions in fishing capacity and other conservation measures, such as time and area closures, reductions in subsidies, 100% observer coverage and controls on illegal fishing," Ovetz said.

ST. LOUIS--October 13, 2005--GenoMed (OTC Pink Sheets GMED), a Next Generation Disease Management company whose business is public health, announced today that it has begun Internet-based clinical trials for influenza and avian influenza, since the same treatment approach is expected to work for both kinds of virus.

There is currently no reliable vaccine or treatment for avian influenza. There are antiviral drugs and a vaccine for regular influenza, but they're far from perfect. The yearly influenza vaccine was recently reported to work in only a third of patients.

GenoMed's treatment has been 80% effective in a limited number of patients with West Nile virus encephalitis since 2003. The company is now ready to test it in viral pneumonias.

Any one interested in signing up for GenoMed's clinical trial just needs to go to GenoMed's website (www.genomed.com), and follow the links for the "Flu trial." The trial documents are self-explanatory.

About GenoMed

GenoMed's broad-spectrum anti-viral approach was specifically mentioned in BioShield II, recently introduced in the US Senate (see Section 2151 of Senate bill S. 975).

Democrats Abroad Launch Final Push to Register American Voters

Former US Ambassador to Thailand William Itoh lends weight to effort

Democrats Abroad-Thailand and Americans Overseas for Kerry (AOK) welcomed William Itoh to Bangkok August 20, 2004. Mr. Itoh, US Ambassador to Thailand from 1996-1999, is lending his support as a member of Ambassadors for Kerry to a global effort to encourage Americans living outside the US to vote. Ambassador Kerry spoke briefly regarding the close friendship between Thailand and the US, stressed John Kerry’s engagement with issues surrounding the 1997-1998 economic and financial crisis, and reassured the audience of about 60 Americans that Kerry remains a strong friend of Thailand.Gary Suwannarat, Chair of Democrats Abroad-Thailand, announced the launch of the organization’s ad campaign to inform Americans that, no matter how long they have lived outside the US, they retain the right to vote.
The basic tool for registering is the Federal Postcard Application (FPCA), available from US Embassies and Consulates. Online resources simplify the process by making the FPCA available anywhere in the world. Diana Kerry, Chair of Americans Overseas for Kerry, has launched a website funded by the Democratic National Committee to facilitate voter registration for Americans living abroad: www.OverseasVote2004.com. This new website enhances resources dedicated to providing voter registration services for overseas Americans, the longest-running of which is the US Government-administered Federal Voting Assistance Program (FVAP) www.fvap.gov.

Voting in each US state is governed by that state’s constitution and administered by state officials. Each American living abroad has to contact her/his own particular county election board.

These websites make it possible to pinpoint the right place to register and vote. The first step is registration: Download the form; print it out; complete it; sign it; and mail it. (Other online voter registration tools require the individual to also download separate instructions to obtain contact information for local election officials; the new website automates this process.) Typically, a citizen receives an absentee ballot in less than 3 weeks. Each voter must mail in the completed and signed ballot by a deadline specified by the state in which they vote.

These websites could result in a substantial rise in the number of votes cast by the 4 - 6 million American civilians living overseas. This roughly equals the population of Massachusetts's, the US's 13th most populous state and home state of John Kerry.

The presidential election in 2000 underlines the potential significance of overseas votes. Only 24.5% of eligible adults voted for George Bush, while 24.8% voted for Al Gore. Some 205,815,000 Americans were eligible to vote, three quarters of whom were registered to vote. Two thirds of registered voters cast ballots: an overall voter turnout of eligible voters of only 51.3%. Turnout among American civilians living outside the US, however, fell short of even that level: estimated at less than 40% in the 2000 election.

The number of overseas American voters is equivalent to 3.8% - 5.7% of the 1.05 million Americans who voted in 2000, compared to the popular vote margin of 0.3% in the Bush-Gore contest. Some 18,000 Americans are believed to reside in Thailand.

Online voting facilitation could help mobilize these millions of voters to cast their votes and influence the outcome of America’s November 2 general election. As well as voting for president and vice-president, Americans will also elect 34 US senators, 435 Congressional Representatives, 13 state governors and numerous state and local officials.

The Ramon Magsaysay Student Essay Writing Competition
Goes To Korea

The Ramon Magsaysay Student Essay Competition (RMSEC) takes a bow in Korea this year, under the auspices of the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation (RMAF) and the Ewha Womans University (EWHA). This pilot of the prestigious competition in South Korea follows its run in the Philippines where the contest started in 2000 as a way for the Magsaysay Award, Asia’s premier prize, to establish a connection with the youth. For its launch in South Korea, the competition invites participation from EWHA’s 17,000 undergraduate students by writing two- to four-page essays in English on the theme, "Greatness of Spirit of Asian Women Leaders: Personal Lessons From Magsaysay Awardees."
Thirteen (13) of 236 Magsaysay Awardees to date are from Korea, three of them are women, all alumnae of the 118-year-old university that is known as the world’s largest women’s university and an excellent ground for honing leadership among Korean women. The three Korean women awardees are: Dr. Helen Kim (1963 awardee for public service), Dr. Lee Tai-young (1975 awardee for community leadership), and Mrs. Kim Im Soon (1989 awardee for community leadership).

The Magsaysay Award, inspired by the "greatness of spirit in selfless service to people" of the late Filipino leader who championed the cause of democracy and the common man during his time, has been honoring, since 1957, the exemplary lives and achievements of individuals and organizations across Asia. Through RMSEC, the awardees are held up as role models among Asian youths. It is planned to go regionwide by 2008. For the 4th cycle in the Philippines, RMSEC will be launched in August during the Magsaysay Awards season this year. The season is built around the birth anniversary of the much-loved former president of the Philipines on August 31and is highlighted by the conferment of the year’s Magsaysay laureates.

RMSEC in Korea is supported by ASIANA AIRLINES which will fly in August the grand prize winner to the Philippines for an all-expense-paid gift prize from RMAF. The Korean winner will witness the conferment of the 2004 Magsaysay awardees in August, attend the awardees’ lecture series, and immerse in Philipine life and sites, particularly in Zambales, the home province of the late president. Another sponsor, International Herald Tribune-JoongAng Daily, which promotes the use of English, offers two-week free subscriptions to registered RMSEC participants, and will provide the grand prize winner and two runners-up half-month exposures to the newsroom. All the finalists and winners will receive handsome gift book sets in English from RMAF.
