Founder of the Thai Petrochemical Industry (TPI) and chairman of the party’s executive member committee Prachai Leophairatana quit Pracharaj on October 5, 2007, reasoning that he and party leader Snoh Thienthong had different political paths. However, the actual reason for Prachai’s departure was Snoh’s decision to back Korn Dabbaransi in his run for prime ministership in the December 23, 2007, elections. Prachai, who was the party’s main financier, was furious and reasoned that instead of spending money to support someone else, he would be better off spending it on setting up his own party. Anongwan and a number of former MPs followed Prachai and joined the Matchima Thippatai Party, while Chianchuang Kalayanamitr replaced Anongwan as the secretarygeneral of Pracharaj. Korn decided to quit Pracharaj on October 31, 2007, and rejoin his old party, Chat Thai, led by Banharn Silapaarcha.

Storm warning - Very close associate of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra. In 2007 called for resignation of His Majesty the King's chielf adviser Privy Council President General (ret.) Prem Tinsulalonda. This is viewed as itself another act of lese majeste given that only the king has the power to appoint or dismiss Privy Council members and Veera demanding one of their removal is tantamount to ordering that it be done.

Storm warning - Very close associate of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra. Thrown off Thai Army TV Channel for making remarks felt to be insulting to His Majesty's chief Privy Council adviser Gen. (ret.) Prem Tinsulalonda. Known to have a foul mouth in public. On 8 November 2007, when a femaml reporter from The Nation group asked him a question he did not like, he retorted, "Who did you fornicate with last night?" Some would observe that this is not prime ministerial material. As of December 2007, however, Samak seems to be front running in popular sentiment for post of prime minister, largely because voters feel he will bring back Thaksin Shinawatra and his policies.

Chalerm Yubamrung

Biography

Special note: Son Duangchalerm fled Thailand in 2001 prior to being charged with the point-blank shooting of a policeman at a bar the former justice minister's sons frequented. He arrived back in kingdom six months later, and was eventually cleared of the charges. There was no surprise in the sentence. Thailand's front-running politicians are known to be able to manipulate public opinion and criminal investigations - especially when the latter impinge on their vested interests.
